Vietnam to compete in Thailand futsal tournament
VOV.VN - The Vietnamese national futsal team on September 9 departed for Thailand to participate in the Continental Futsal Championship 2022 which will run from September 11 to 16 in Bangkok.
Vietnam will play in Group B alongside Finland and Iran, while hosts Thailand will face Morocco, and Mozambique in Group A.
According to the latest world futsal rankings released by FIFA, Iran which currently rank sixth in the world and first in Asia are considered the strongest team that challenge all other underdogs taking part in the tournament. The competition in Thailand will provide an excellent opportunity for the Vietnamese team now in 42nd place globally to gain experience ahead future competitive international tournaments.
The top two teams from both groups will progress through to the semi-final round.
The Vietnamese team recently completed a one-month training camp in Ho Chi Minh City. After two friendly matches played against Sahako FC, head coach Giustozzi Diego Raul finalised a list of 16 footballers to compete in the Continental Futsal Championship 2022.
After the Thailand futsal tournament, the Vietnamese team will then travel to Kuwait to compete in the finals of the 2022 Asian Football Federation (AFC) Futsal Asian Cup due to run from September 27 to October 8. Iran are currently the defending champions, winning the title in 2018.
Vietnam will play in Group D alongside Japan, the Republic of Korea, and Saudi Arabia.
The country’s best-ever finish at the tournament was when they came fourth in the 2016 tournament. Meanwhile, Iran have won the championship titles 12 times.
