Vietnam through to final of international U19 football tournament
VOV.VN - The Vietnamese national U19 team have secured a place in the final round of an international U19 football tournament being held in the southern province of Binh Duong after overcoming Malaysia 2-1.
The first half saw Malaysia open the scoring in the fifth minute.
The Vietnamese players then equalised through a penalty in the 28th minute.
The match looked like it was heading for a stalemate as both teams couldn’t muster any successful attacks in the second half.
In extra time, Vietnam’s U19 team were awarded a penalty after a Malaysian defender committed a foul. Khuat Van Khang scored passed the Malaysian goalie to make the score 2-1 in favour of Vietnam, with the match ending this way.
The Vietnamese team now have a total of six points after two matches and have booked their ticket to the final round of the international U19 football tournament.
The tournament is being held at the Go Dau Stadium in Binh Duong province from August 5 to August 11, with all matches being free for spectators.
As the hosts, Vietnam are taking on strong regional rivals from Thailand, Myanmar, and Malaysia.
The teams are competing in a round-robin format, with the best two teams progressing through to the final round. The third and fourth-placed teams will compete for a bronze medal.
The champions of the tournament will receive a cash prize of US$10,000, with the second and third-placed teams will be given sums of US$6,000 and US$4,000, respectively.
