Vietnam secures additional spot at world gymnastics championships

VOV.VN - SEA Games 2023 champion Nguyen Van Khanh Phong won a silver medal on June 18 in the men's rings of Asian tournament, earning Vietnam’s second spot at the World Gymnastics Championship which will take place later this year.

At the Asian Artistic Gymnastics Championships that concluded in Singapore, Phong took a total of 14.366 points to finish second, behind China’s Lan Xingyu with 15.200 points.

This was the only medal that Vietnamese gymnasts have won at the Asian tournament.

Phong will join his teammate Van Vi Luong to progress to the world championships to be held in Belgium from September 30 to October 8.

Luong earlier ranked second in the men’s all-around finals, becoming the first Vietnamese gymnast to qualify for the world championships.

The Asian championships in Singapore from June 15 to 18 is a key event on the road towards the Paris Olympics. The leading athletes at the tournament will progress through to the world championships in Belgium this September.

Winners of the world championships will then qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
