Vietnam qualify for AVC Nations Cup quarterfinals despite RoK loss

VOV.VN - The Vietnam national men’s volleyball team have earned a place in the quarterfinals of the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Men's Nations Cup 2025 in Bahrain, despite a 3-0 loss to the Republic Korea (RoK) in their final group stage match.

After an impressive 3-0 victory over New Zealand in their opening match, coach Tran Dinh Tien and his team faced a formidable challenge against world No. 25 RoK. Vietnam entered the match aiming to maintain their lead in the group, but the Koreans proved too strong.

In the first set, Vietnam surprised their opponents with a confident start, capitalising on the opponents’ reception errors to build a 5-point lead. However, the tide quickly turned as the RoK tightened their formation and demonstrated superior composure, defeating Vietnam 25-22.

The second set was a tense back-and-forth battle. Vietnam stayed competitive, thanks to the effective connection between Cong Duc and Quoc Duy. But as the Korean side adapted to Vietnam’s strategy of focusing attacks on “NishiDuy,” they gradually gained control. Vietnam managed to close the gap to just one point late in the set but ultimately fell 23-25, giving the RoK a 2-0 lead.

In the third set, psychological pressure began to weigh heavily on the Vietnamese players. The RoK unleashed a series of powerful attacks and quickly pulled ahead, maintaining a wide margin throughout. Vietnam struggled to regroup and suffered a lopsided 12-25 loss, their most one-sided set of the match.

Vietnam finished second in Group D, and they are to face Group C winners in the upcoming quarterfinal round.
