Vietnam invited to compete at 2026 Olympic Winter Games

VOV.VN - Thomas Bach, president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), has sent an invitation to the Vietnam Olympic Committee to invite the country to participate in the 2026 Milano Cortina Olympic Winter Games.

Accordingly, the Games is scheduled to take place in Milan, Italy, from February 6 to 22.

Vietnam is likely to send representatives to the 2026 Winter Olympics. It has previously sent Duong Truong Lap, the sole Vietnamese representative, to compete at the ninth Asian Winter Games, to be held in Harbin, China, in February. Lap will compete in the 500m, 1,000m, and 1,500m short track speed skating.

This marks only the second time that Vietnam has sent athletes to the continental winter sports tournament. The first time was in Sapporo, Japan, in 2017 when the country was represented by six male athletes in skiing.

Next year, the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics will feature 16 Olympic sports and 116 events, bringing together nearly 3,000 athletes from around the world. These athletes will compete in a wide range of winter sports, including skiing and ice hockey.

Vietnam did not have any representative to the 2022 Winter Olympics held in Beijing, China.

Most notably, SEA Games 33 in Thailand later this year has confirmed to have winter sports, and Vietnam is considering sending local athletes to compete in skiing and ice hockey.
