Vietnam finish as runner-up at SEA Women’s Volleyball Tournament

VOV.VN - Vietnam claimed a runner-up finisher after a loss to Thailand in the second round of the Southeast Asian Women's Volleyball Tournament (SEA V.League) which concluded on August 13 in Chiang Mai.

During the SEA V.League 2023's second stage held from August 11 to 13, Vietnamese players endured several disadvantages as they lacked key players in their line-up, such as captain Tran Thi Thanh Thuy, along with spikers Hoang Thi Kieu Trinh and Tran Tu Linh.

Furthermore, acting coach Nguyen Trong Linh took charge of the young squad for the first time as head coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet will lead the senior team for the annual international VTV Cup from August 19 to 26 in Lao Cai province.

Despite all of these challenges, the Vietnamese team left a good impression on the regional competition as they trounced Indonesia 3-0 and the Philippines 3-1 in the first and second matches.

In the final match held on August 13 at Chiang Mai Sports Complex, hosts Thailand dominated the game and easily defeated Vietnam 25-15 in the first set. They went on to boast their strength, outperforming their Vietnamese visitors in the two following sets by 25-23 and 25-22.

Ranking second, Vietnam received a cash prize worth US$28,000.

Started in 2019, the annual SEA Women's Volleyball Tournament had brought together four teams from Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam in the 2023 competition.

In 2023 the women’s event is split into two rounds, with the first held from August 4 to 6 in Vietnam’s Vinh Phuc province, and the second in Thailand’s Chiang Mai from August 11 to 13.

This year marks the third consecutive time Thailand won the championship title, while Vietnam claimed the 4th place in 2019 and the 2nd place in 2022 and 2023 versions.
