Vietnam fall to Australia at U17 Women’s Asian Cup, miss World Cup spot

VOV.VN - Vietnam suffered a 0-2 defeat to Australia in the quarter-finals of the AFC Women’s U17 Asian Cup in Suzhou, China, on May 11, missing out on a place at the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup.

The Vietnamese players started the game brightly but faced clear disadvantages in physical strength and height against the Australian side.

Despite a disciplined performance, coach Okiyama Masahiko’s squad struggled to create a breakthrough against physically dominant opponents.

Australia played cautiously early on before striking twice in quick succession. Frideriki Karaberis and Leyla Hussein scored in the 29th and 31st minutes respectively to give the Australian side a 2-0 lead.

In the second half, Vietnam pushed forward in search of a comeback. Players such as Minh Anh and Ngoc Anh created several opportunities, but the Vietnamese side failed to convert their chances.

As the match progressed, Vietnam’s players showed signs of fatigue and were unable to generate sustained pressure on the Australian goal.

Australia also reduced the tempo in the closing stages while maintaining control of the game till the referee’s last whistle.

With the victory, Australia advanced to the semi-finals, where they will face Japan in the next match. The two teams also became the first Asian representatives to qualify for the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup.
