Vietnam exit ASIAD women's football after late extra-time loss to China
VOV.VN - The Vietnamese women's national football team bowed out of the 2026 Asian Games quarterfinals on September 25, suffering a narrow 0-1 defeat to China after 120 minutes at the Nagai Stadium, Japan.
Wang Shuang netted the game's sole goal in the 109th minute. Despite missing out on the semifinals, Vietnam delivered a resilient display, maintaining a compact defensive shape through regulation time before conceding in extra time.
Addressing the post-match press conference, head coach Hoang Van Phuc highlighted the team's tactical discipline and mental fortitude.
"After a sluggish start in our first two group matches, the team rebounded well today," Phuc said. "Although we were missing three players through injury, the squad executed our tactical plan of proactive defending and swift transition to near perfection. What pleased me most was their composure against a physically and technically superior opponent.
Goalkeeper Kim Thanh, despite being over 30, maintained exceptional form and directed the backline brilliantly."
Assessing the team's ongoing transition, Phuc emphasized the developmental value of the continental tournament. "This tournament has been an invaluable learning experience for our younger players as they face Asia's powerhouses. When called upon, they performed with notable confidence, which is a promising sign for our squad rebuilding process."
