Vietnam edge Yemen 1-0 in AFC U17 Asian Cup 2026 opener
VOV.VN - AFC U17 Asian Cup 2026 got underway in Saudi Arabia with an impressive opening performance from Vietnam, who secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Yemen in Group C on May 6.
Determined to start their campaign with three points, Vietnamese players entered the match aggressively and quickly took control of possession. Head coach Cristiano Roland instructed his players to push high up the pitch and apply constant pressure on Yemen’s defence.
Vietnam created several promising opportunities in the first half, with striker Dai Nhan coming closest to opening the scoring on two occasions. However, the young striker failed to convert as his efforts narrowly missed the target.
Despite Vietnam’s attacking dominance, Yemen proved to be physically strong and dangerous opponents. The West Asian side frequently threatened through quick counterattacks and high pressing. Goalkeeper Xuan Hoa delivered a composed performance, producing important saves to keep Vietnam level before halftime.
The pace of the game intensified after the break as both sides exchanged attacks in an entertaining second half. Yemen continued to rely on their physical advantage and pressing game, while Vietnam patiently searched for openings on the flanks.
The decisive moment arrived in the 77th minute. Nguyen Luc launched a well-weighted pass toward the right wing for Quang Hung, who had been introduced as a substitute earlier in the second half. The winger used his pace and technical ability to beat a Yemen defender before firing a clinical shot past goalkeeper Wesam Al Asbahi to give Vietnam the lead.
After conceding, Yemen pushed forward aggressively in search of an equaliser. However, Vietnam’s defence remained disciplined and organised in the closing stages, successfully protecting their narrow advantage until the final whistle.
The 1-0 victory gives Vietnam a valuable three points in their opening Group C match and provides a major confidence boost ahead of their next challenge against the Republic of Korea on May 10.
