Vietnam earn away draw in opening tie of World Cup qualifiers

VOV.VN - The Vietnam men’s national football team played out a goalless draw in their away tie against regional rivals Thailand in the opening fixture of Group G in the Asian Zone’s World Cup qualifiers at the Thammasat stadium on September 5.

Thailand enjoyed the home advantage as they hosted Vietnam in the opening game of the Asian zone’s second qualifying round for the World Cup 2020.
Despite having a chance to go ahead in the opening minutes, the Vietnamese footballers failed to score in the fixture.
Nguyen Van Toan missed a chance to put Vietnam ahead in the 16th minute.
The Thailand team also created many chances but were denied by a number of strong saves by Vietnamese goalkeeper Dang Van Lam.
Vietnam’s star man in midfield Nguyen Quang Hai was persistently fouled by the Thai players throughout the game.
Both teams went in goalless at half time.
Thailand began to dominate the tie in the second half with the home team putting plenty of pressure on the Vietnamese defence.

Vietnamese goalkeeper Dang Van Lam was kept busy until the 94th minute.
HAGL captain Tuan Anh, No 14, put in a tremendous shift for the Vietnamese team.

The best chance of the game for the away side fell to forward Nguyen Van Toan in the 77th minute. However, his effort failed to beat Thai goalkeeper Siwarak Tedsungnoen.

With the regional derby ending goalless, both teams had to settle for a single point each in Group G.
