Vietnam and Thailand not together at AFF Cup 2022

VOV.VN - Vietnam and current champions Thailand have been made the top seeds at the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Cup 2022, meaning they are not in the same group.

The No. 2 seed group consists of current runners-up Indonesia and Malaysia.

According to details given by the AFF, Singapore and the Philippines have been placed in the No. 3 seed group.

Furthermore, the No. 4 seed group will involve the participation of Myanmar and Cambodia. Elsewhere, Laos, Timor Leste, and Brunei rank in the No. 5 seed group, with Timor Leste and Brunei competing in a play-off round to choose the 10th team to participate at the AFF Cup.

The draw for the competition is set to get underway in Bangkok, Thailand, on August 30.

The event has been held every two years since 1996, with the exception of 2021 when it was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

It regional competition was originally founded as the Tiger Cup after Singapore’s Asia Pacific Breweries, makers of Tiger Beer, sponsored the event from its inauguration in 1996 until the 2004 edition.

After Asia Pacific Breweries withdrew as title sponsors, the competition changed its name to be known as the AFF Championship for the 2007 edition. From 2008, Japanese auto-company Suzuki purchased the naming rights for the competition, with the event being named the AFF Suzuki Cup for sponsorship reasons.

Most notably, the Vietnam national team have won the tournament in 2008 and 2018.

Moving forward, the 2022 version of the competition marks the 14th edition of the tournament. It’s scheduled to take place from December 23 to January 15, 2023.
