VFF trains more VAR referees to raise V.League standards
VOV.VN - The Vietnam Football Federation (VFF), in coordination with the Vietnam Professional Football (VPF) Company, opened its fifth VAR referee training course in Hanoi on August 19 as part of efforts to improve officiating and the quality of domestic professional competitions.
The course, running from August 18-27 at VFF headquarters, brings together 25 participants, including 23 from Vietnam and two from Laos and Malaysia.
It is the fifth VAR training course held in Vietnam and the first to be directly organised by the VFF, with VPF providing professional expertise and operational experience.
In his remarks, VFF Vice President Tran Anh Tu said VAR operations in Vietnam have made positive progress since their introduction to domestic competitions. However, he noted that VAR remains a technically complex field, requiring referees not only to understand procedures but also to make sound judgments under pressure and demonstrate professional composure.
According to Tu, the course is expected to strengthen participants' knowledge, skills and practical experience while expanding the pool of qualified VAR officials to meet the growing demands of Vietnamese football.
Dang Thanh Ha, head of the VFF Referee Committee, revealed that VAR has helped improve decision-making after three seasons of use, but Vietnam is still operating the system at a basic level.
In his view, VAR referees also need to better identify clear errors and provide convincing grounds for intervention, while on-field referees should avoid becoming overly reliant on the technology and remain proactive and decisive.
During the course, participants will receive theoretical instruction before practising VAR procedures and simulated match situations. The training is designed to improve incident recognition, coordination and decision-making in line with established protocols.
They are expected to undergo further assessment in a real match in September. Successful participants may qualify for FIFA-recognised certification, allowing them to officiate matches using VAR.
VFF noted that continued VAR training is essential to developing a stronger pool of referees and raising standards across Vietnam's professional football competitions.
