VAR to be piloted at National Football Cup Finals

VOV.VN - The Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) and the Vietnam Professional Football Joint Stock Company (VPF) are actively implementing plans to trial video assistant referee (VAR) technology in several games during the end of the 2022 to 2023 season, including the National Football Cup Finals.

According to details given by Tran Anh Tu, chairman of the VPF, starting from the 2023 to 2024 season, VAR technology will be used in V. League matches.

He noted that FIFA highly appreciated the ability shown by Vietnamese VAR referees. Currently, there are 18 Vietnamese referees who have completed VAR training courses and are capable of meeting FIFA's criteria, Tu added.

All equipment needed to operate VAR technology has been imported by the VPF and installed on two mobile VAR vehicles.

The technology is used to review situations that lead to a goal, a penalty or, a red card. Only the referee will have the authority to call for a video review, and players and coaches are not allowed to put pressure on the referee whilst they review the decision.
