U17 Vietnam to learn World Cup opponents on May 21
VOV.VN - U17 Vietnam will learn their opponents for the 2026 FIFA U17 World Cup when the tournament draw takes place on May 21 at FIFA headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland.
According to FIFA, the draw ceremony will be broadcast live on the organization’s official platforms and will determine the group-stage matchups for the tournament.
The 2026 FIFA U17 World Cup will be held in Qatar from November 19 to December 13, featuring 48 teams.
Under the competition format, the teams will be divided into 12 groups of four and play a single round-robin format. The top two teams from each group, along with the eight best third-placed teams, will advance to the knockout stage.
Matches are scheduled to take place at the Aspire Zone complex in Al Rayyan, part of the Doha metropolitan area, which features modern sporting facilities.
Asia’s nine representatives at the tournament have already been confirmed, including hosts Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Uzbekistan, Australia, China, Tajikistan, Japan, the Republic of Korea (RoK) and U17 Vietnam. Notably, coach Cristiano Roland’s side are the only Southeast Asian representatives at the tournament.
With the expanded format, U17 Vietnam are considered to have a stronger chance of progressing further in the tournament than under previous editions. The competition will also mark Vietnam’s first appearance at the FIFA U17 World Cup.
