Tokyo 2020 Olympics: Last Vietnamese hopeful fails to enter finals
VOV.VN - Quach Thi Lan, the last Vietnamese hopeful at the ongoing Tokyo 2020 Olympics, ended her journey after finishing sixth out of eight runners in the 400m hurdles first semi-final on August 2.
Amid heavy rain, athletes still entered the competition as scheduled. Lan was one of the eight runners in the first round and she finished sixth, clocking 56.78 seconds.
First place went to defending Olympic champion Dalilah Muhammad of the US with a time of 53.33 seconds, while Janieve Russell of Jamaica came in second to cruise into the finals.
In the qualifying round, the Vietnamese athlete finished fourth with a time of 55.71 seconds. This is the second best result in Lan’s career following the 55.30s record that helped her secure a gold medal at the 2018 Asian Games.
Despite her defeat, Lan has made history as she is the first Vietnamese track-and-field athlete who has reached the semi-finals of an Olympics.
Vietnam has sent 18 athletes to compete in 11 sports at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. However, some of the athletes have failed to win a medal for Vietnam in prospective sports like weightlifting, boxing and rowing.
Some athletes have already flown home and the rest will fly back on August 4.
