Swimmer Nguyen Huy Hoang voted best athlete of 2021

VOV.VN - Local swimmer Nguyen Huy Hoang was voted as the best athlete of 2021 following a string of successful achievements throughout the year, the National Sports Administration and the Vietnam Olympic Committee announced on January 5.

The Quang Binh-born athlete won two gold medals when competing in the 25-metre pool at the National Swimming Championships. He also put on several impressive performances at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and the International Swimming Federation (FINA) World Swimming Championships.

Second position went to track-and-field athlete Nguyen Thi Oanh, whilst taekwondo martial artist Truong Thi Kim Tuyen came third.

Other outstanding athletes to make the list include women’s footballer Huynh Nhu and track-and-field athlete Quach Thi Lan.

In the poll for coaches, Pham Minh Giang led the way at the top of the list. Under the leadership of Giang, the Vietnamese futsal team progressed to the round of quarter finals of the FIFA Futsal World Cup.

Elsewhere, coaches Tran Van Sy in track-and-field, Park Hang-seo in men’s football, Doan Thi Kim Chi in women’s football, and Le Tung Duong in karate took second, third, fourth, and fifth positions, respectively.

Weightlifter Le Van Cong was named as the most outstanding athlete with a disability for his silver medal at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics.

His coach Le Quang Thai also won the award for being the most outstanding trainer for disabled athletes.
