SEA Games 33: Vietnam holds firm in top three of medal table
VOV.VN - Vietnam clinched five gold medals on the sixth day of competition at the 33rd Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) in Thailand on December 15, maintaining third place in the overall medal standings with a total of 40 golds.
Wushu and athletics accounted for all five gold medals. Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy opened the day for Vietnam by winning the women’s 60kg sanda (Sanshou) title, followed by Truong Van Chuong, who claimed gold in the men’s 70kg sanda division.
In athletics, Vietnam secured three more gold medals through Quach Thi Lan in the women’s 400m hurdles, Nguyen Trung Cuong in the men’s 3,000m steeplechase, and Nguyen Thi Oanh in the women’s 10,000m.
Oanh’s victory marked a successful title defence from the 2023 SEA Games and made her the most decorated athlete in SEA Games athletics history with 14 gold medals, surpassing the previous record held by Nguyen Thi Huyen.
Vietnam also collected several silver medals during the day, including a narrow 2–3 defeat by the women’s volleyball team against hosts Thailand in the final. In football, Vietnam beat the Philippines 2–0 to advance to the final, securing at least a silver medal.
After six days of competition, Thailand has maintained its top position with 145 golds, followed by Indonesia (52 golds) and Vietnam (40 golds).
Then come Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, Myanmar and Laos follow in the standings. Brunei claimed their first gold medal of the Games on December 15, while Timor-Leste has yet to secure a gold medal so far.
