Relive Vietnam Olympic team’s historic journey at ASIAD 2018

VOV.VN - The Vietnamese Olympic team achieved their best ever result with a fourth place finish in the men’s football at the Asian Games (ASIAD), let’s look back their historic journey at the games through 7 matches:

On August 14, Vietnam defeated Pakistan 3-0 in their first match at ASIAD 2018 in Indonesia.
Although Cong Phuong missed 2 penalties, the Vietnamese Olympic team took a big win against Pakistan thanks to goals from Quang Hai (21st minute), Van Quyet (41st) and Cong Phuong (72nd).
Vietnam took their second win in their next match, beating Nepal 2-0 on August 16.
Key players including Van Quyet, Xuan Truong, Van Hau and Cong Phuong were left on the bench but Vietnam still fought to victory over Nepal thanks to a great performance by Anh Duc with his 31st minute goal and Van Duc’s 63rd minute strike.
Vietnam beat Japan 1-0 in their third and final match of the group stage on August 19.
Van Toan slipped the ball through to Quang Hai who scored in the third minute. Over the rest 87 minutes, the Vietnamese Olympic team played safely, containing the Japanese team and defending their top position in Group D.
Vietnam beat Bahrain 1-0 on August 23.
Sanad Ahmed received a red card in the 42nd minute, offering an advantage for the team led by head coach Park Hang Seo. Upon being brought on from the bench in the second half, Cong Phuong scored the only goal of the game for Vietnam in the 88th minute.
Vietnam took another 1-0 win over Syria on August 27.
The match was hard fought over 90 minutes. Head coach Park Hang Seo brought on Anh Duc and Van Toan in extra time and the changes succeeded when Anh Duc laid on a sweet assist for Van Toan to stroke the ball home in the 108th minute.
Vietnam’s fortunes changes in the semi-finals as they lost 3-1 to the Republic of Korea on August 29.
The national Olympic team had just one day off between the quarter-final and the semi-final match, leaving no time for the players to recover from the 120 minute exertions against Syria. In a match against strong rival the Republic of Korea, Vietnam fell 3 goals behind, but had Minh Vuong to thank for a consolation goal in the 70th minute.
Vietnam drew 1-1 with UAE over 90 minutes before losing 4-3 on penalties in the third-place play-off on September 1.
Ahmed Al Attas opened the scoring in the 27th minute, Vietnam scored a reply 10 minutes through Van Quyet. The Vietnamese Olympic team had many opportunities to score in the second half but their profligacy cost them the win. Unable to put the ball past an excellent UAE goalkeeper, the team lost 4-3 on penalties to finish in fourth place in the men’s football at ASIAD 2018.
