Over 50 Vietnamese golfers compete in 2023 Sakura Championship in Japan

VOV.VN - More than 50 local golfers and a number of Japanese guests attended the 2023 Sakura Championship which opened on March 31 at Fuji Kokusai Golf Club in Shizuoka Prefecture in central Japan.

This represents the largest group of golfers from Vietnam to make the trip to the Far East country since Japan fully reopened its doors to foreign tourists in October last year.

The participation of a large group of Vietnamese golfers represents a positive sign, particularly with regard to the recovery of tours combining sports competitions between the two countries after more than three years of suspension due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hoang Dinh Giang, chairman of Yo Group Trading and Service Joint Stock Company - the organiser of the tournament, revealed that 2023 is a special year which marks the 50th anniversary of joint diplomatic ties, adding that the organisation of the event during the cherry season aims to help Vietnamese golfers compete on modern golf courses during the most beautiful period in Japan.

Giang emphasised that through this tournament, the company plans to further promote tourism combined with sports competitions between both countries moving forward.

Golf is one of the most popular sports in Japan. According to an estimate by Alexandru Arba, a researcher about Japan at Statista, the number of people using golf courses in the Far East nation last year reached 10.52 million, an increase of nearly 13% compared to a previous decade.
