Nguyen Thi Tam into semifinals of world boxing championship
VOV.VN - Nguyen Thi Tam enjoyed a wonderful day after beating her Spanish opponent Laura Fuertes 5-0 to progress to the semifinals of the 48-50 kg event at the IBA Women's World Boxing Championships.
Advancing to the semifinals guaranteed her at least a bronze medal and US$25,000, equivalent to VND600 million, in prize money.
Fuertes was duly awarded the bronze medal in the light flyweight division of the 2022 IBA Women's World Boxing Championships following her defeat, becoming the first Spanish boxer to win a World Championships medal.
However, the Spanish boxer endured a difficult encounter against Tam, struggling to land any significant blows to score points in the quarterfinals of the 48-50 kg event which was held in New Delhi, India, on March 22.
Each round of the bout saw the Vietnamese boxer win 10-9, with Tam getting the maximum 30 points from all five referees, whilst Fuertes scored only 27 points.
In the semifinals, Tam will next face Wassila Lkhadiri of France, a fighter who is notable for winning European bronze medals in 2014 and 2019.
