Ngan stopped in quarter-final of Summer Youth Olympics

Young hope in Vietnamese taekwondo, Ho Thi Kim Ngan, was knocked out in the quarter-final on the second day of the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics, held on October 8 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Ngan competed in the women’s under 49kg class. She was beaten 6-5 by Ryadninskaya Elizaveta from Russia.

Having consecutively won at the World Taekwondo Junior Champs, Ngan faced Elizaveta in the quarter-finals with confidence, and quickly led 3-0 in the first round. In the second round, Ngan continued to lead 5-0, only to lose her nerve and let her opponent strike back and win 6 points consecutively.

The fighter, from the central province of An Giang, failed to make any breakthrough as her opponent had stronger defence. In the previous match, Ngan beat Yangchen Tshering from Bhutan 22-0.

Meanwhile, young swimmer Nguyen Huy Hoang ranked eighth in the men’s 200m freestyle.

The Vietnam sports delegation continues to compete in the badminton men’s and women’s rounds with players Nguyen Hai Dang and Vu Thi Anh Thu, and Nguyen Van Khanh Phong and Pham Nhu Phuong in aerobatics.

The delegation’s target is a minimum of 2-3 medals, including one gold. It could soon be fulfilled with an excellent performance by young weightlifter Ngo Son Dinh in the men’s 56kg. His performance in snatch was 114kg and clean and jerk was 148kg.

The last ‘golden hope’ is Hoang, who won silver in the men’s 1,500m and bronze in the 800m freestyle at Asiad 2018.
