National women's football team set for busy 2025
VOV.VN - The Vietnamese women’s national football team, led by coach Mai Duc Chung, will have a busy schedule in 2025, with three major tournaments at both regional and continental levels.
This year has generally been quite "relaxed" for the team as they did not take part in many official tournaments. However, looking ahead to 2025, coach Mai Duc Chung and his players will have a packed schedule with three major tournaments, including the ASEAN Women's Championships, the 33rd SEA Games, and qualification for the AFC Women's Asian Cup.
At the ASEAN Women's Championships, the Vietnamese women's team will face off against not only their strong Thai rivals, but also other opponents who have made rapid progress in the region.
During the 2022 tournament, holders Vietnam failed to defend their title after losing 4-0 to the Philippines in the semi-finals.
In addition, the Indonesian women's team also plan to use naturalise players in the competition which will make them a formidable opponent at the upcoming tournament.
The 33rd SEA Games will also be a big challenge as the women’s team seek to defend their gold medal.
After winning four consecutive gold medals, coach Mai Duc Chung and his team will also face challenges from tough competitors such as the Thailand, the Philippines, and Indonesia.
Meanwhile, qualification for the AFC Women's Asian Cup is seen as a relatively "easier" task for the Vietnamese women's team. With their strong position in the FIFA rankings, they are not expected to face weaker opponents. Therefore, their goal of finishing at the top of their group and advancing to the final round is considered achievable.
Despite having an easy schedule in 2024, the Vietnamese women's team did not slack off.
The players had numerous opportunities to compete in the National Championships and the National Cup, while Ho Chi Minh City players also had the chance to face strong teams from across the continent in the 2024/2025 AFC Women's Champions League.
Although there were no official tournaments, the team still participated in several training courses and friendly matches abroad with international opponents, thereby providing valuable experience to help improve their skills and prepare for the upcoming tournaments.
Most notably, in October the women’s national team played friendly matches against China and Uzbekistan and achieved positive results.
Head coach Mai Duc Chung stated that many young players will be called up for key tournaments in 2025. These young players will be given opportunities to learn, improve, and play alongside senior members of the squad on the field.
