National squad to gather in mid-January for World Cup qualifiers

VOV.VN - The Vietnamese men’s national football team are set to convene once again in mid-January in order to prepare for their upcoming match against Australia on January 27 in Melbourne in the third round of Asian qualifiers for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

After finishing third in the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Cup, the national squad is scheduled to return to the country on December 31.

They will then undergo an isolation period in Hanoi and receive their third COVID-19 vaccine before having a reunion with their families.

Local footballers will then have a short period of time relax as they must quickly prepare for more fixtures in the final round of qualifiers for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

After taking on Australia in an away trip on January 27, the national team will then come back to the country for a fixture against China which will be played at the My Dinh National Stadium on February 1.

Vietnam are currently bottom of Group B with zero points.

The nation has so far lost 3-1 to Saudi Arabia in Riyadh on September 2, 1-0 to Australia on September 7, 3-2 to China on October 8, 3-1 to Oman on October 12, 1-0 to Japan on November 11, and 1-0 at home to Saudi Arabia on November 16.

However, the national team’s participation in this round marks the first time Vietnam have ever made it to this stage of World Cup qualifiers.
