Local players progress to quarter-finals of Vietnam Open 2022

VOV.VN - All four Vietnamese players safely made it into the quarter-final round of the women’s singles of the Vietnam Open 2022 - Yonex Sunrise Cup after enjoying consecutive wins on September 29.

At 21 years old and the youngest local player participating in the tournament, Tran Thi Phuong Thuy trounced Indian rival Das Rituparna 21-15 and 21-16 in the final match of the women’s singles on September 29, with the game being held at the Nguyen Du competition hall in Ho Chi Minh City.

This comes after Vu Thi Trang faced Gadde Shivani of India, who is ranked 115th in the world and 32 places higher than her Vietnamese opponent.

The Indian rival dominated the game in the first set by winning 21-15, although Trang turned around the situation in the second and third sets with scores of 25-18 and 25-17, securing a place in the quarter-finals in the process.

The competition also saw Vu Thi Anh Thu, 261st in the world rankings, defeat Kasturi Raddhakrishnan of Malaysia, 220th in world, 21-9 and 21-8.

Elsewhere, world champion Nguyen Thuy Linh easily gained a victory over Ng Tin Yan of Hong Kong (China) 21-7 and 21-6. Moving ahead to the quarter-finals, Trang will face No. 1 seed Aya Ohori of Japan, who is currently 27th in world rankings.

Furthermore, Thuy Linh will face with No. 4 seed Ruselli Hartawan of Indonesia who is placed at 49th in the global rankings.

Anh Thu will play No. 7 seed Goh Jin-wei of Malaysia, while Phuong Thuy will vie for a semi-final spot against No. 5 seed Kisona Selvaduray of Malaysia.

The 2022 Vietnam Open is the fourth Super 100 tournament of the 2022 Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Tour and is also part of the Vietnam Open championships, which has been held since 1996.

The badminton tournament has a total prize money of US$75,000 on offer and it will last through to October 2.
