Local athletes win gold at Asian Rifle/Pistol Championship
VOV.VN - Pham Quang Huy and his teammate Trinh Thu Vinh brought home a gold medal in the team’s 10m air pistol category at the Asian Rifle/Pistol Championship which took place on January 9 in Jakarta of Indonesia.
The pair took the lead by winning 7-1, 9-3, and 15-5 before their Indian duo Arjun Cheema and Rhythm Sangwan narrowed the gap by winning 15-11.
Through a strong performance both Vietnamese athletes scored 16 points, overwhelming their Indian rivals by 0.2 points and clinching the gold medal.
The gold medal at the Asian tournament marks a good start for the team, but it didn’t help them to earn any Olympic place.
Currently, Vietnam have earned one place to compete at the Paris Games for Trinh Thu Vinh, who was placed fifth at the 2023 world championships' women's 10m air pistol.
The Asian Rifle/Pistol Championship which is the Asian zonal Olympic qualification, sees many athletes competing in 18 classes for men and 14 for women, along with four for mixed teams. Junior athletes will also have the chance to shine in eight classes for both individuals and teams.
Head coach Park Chung-gun picked the country’s best 11 athletes to take part in a two-week training course in Jakarta, before beginning the tournament from January 8 to 18.
