Liem receives US$7,500 cash prize at FTX Crypto Cup
VOV.VN - Vietnamese grandmaster Le Quang Liem won a cash prize of US$7,500 at the FTX Crypto Cup 2022 following his victory over Polish rival Jan-Krzysztof Duda in the third match held in the United States on August 17.
The Ho Chi Minh City native suffered defeat in the opening two matches against Levon Aronian of Armenia and Alireza Firouzja of Iran, with his third game being against the talented Pole Jan-Krzysztof Duda who won the Chess World Cup in 2021.
Liem was able to take advantage of holding the white pawn in the first game, putting plenty of pressure on the Polish player, with Liem able to gain victory after 66 moves.
The 31-year-old player entered the second game with a cautious approach, although he went on to trounce Duda after 53 moves.
Liem held his Polish rival to a draw in the third game following 71 moves. The match therefore ended 2.5-0.5 in favour of Quang Liem.
Moving forward, the Vietnamese player will face chess legend Magnus Carlsen of Norway in the fourth match on August 18.
The FTX Crypto Cup is the sixth event in the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour and opened on August 15, with the tournament scheduled to last through to August 21.
The format is a round-robin featuring eight players, with each round involving a match of four rapid games. The winner earns US$7,500 and three points.
