Liem drops ranking after third draw at Super Grandmaster Tournament

Le Quang Liem pocketed the third draw at the Danzhou Super Grandmaster Tournament in China on July 11.

Vietnamese Liem in the white-piece side tied with Yu Yangji of the host after 69 moves.

The third draw pulled Liem, on 1.5 point, from No 4 to No 8 in the 10-man ranking table. Yu with the same point secured Liêm’s previous place.

Liem will now play Russian Vladimir Malakhov, who is currently in the fourth position. On July 11, Malakhov tied with Chinese Wang Hao.

Wei Yi of China maintains his position at top of the table with 2.5 points after three games.

His country-fellow Ding Liren is second with 2 points.

The eighth super grandmaster has been organised from 9th to 19th July in Danzhou on the island province of Hainan.

Players compete in a single round-robin system that features five international grandmasters and the top Chinese players.

The total prize money is US$60,000, with US$20,000 for the first place.
