Liem beats world champion at Champions Chess Tour Final
VOV.VN - Leading Vietnamese chess player Le Quang Liem outplayed World Cup champion Jan-Krzysztof Duda of Poland during Round 4 of Champions Chess Tour Final held in the United States on November 18.
Before their clash, Duda had recorded three wins in a row and shared top position with world #1 Magnus Carlsen of Norway, gaining nine points each. Meanwhile, the Vietnamese GM had only earned four points after three matches.
During the first and second sets Liem held the Polish player to a draw after 57 moves and 106 moves, respectively.
The GM, taking the advantages of the white pawn in the third set, then used attacking tactics to defeat the 2021 World Cup champion after 46 moves.
Moving into the last set, Liem showed his confidence and forced Jan-Krzysztof Duda to accept defeat.
With the 3-1 victory, Liem climbed to third position with seven points. Duda dropped to second place, while Carlsen retained top spot.
The November 19 match is worth watching when the Vietnamese grandmaster is scheduled to take on Carlsen.
