Le Van Cong wins silver at Para Powerlifting Asia-Oceania Open Champs
VOV.VN - Vietnamese powerlifter Le Van Cong on April 7 pocketed a silver medal at the 2026 Para Powerlifting Asia-Oceania Open Championships in Thailand after coming second overall in the men’s under-49kg category.
He lifted 163kg, an impressive result given the high level of competition. Indonesia’s Abdul Hadi took gold with 179kg, while Kazakhstan’s Yerbolat Karibay claimed bronze with 157kg.
This achievement opened up opportunities for the Vietnamese athlete to accumulate important points on his journey towards the 2026 Asian Para Games and the 2028 Paralympic Games.
The tournament, taking place in Bangkok from April 7 to 12, has brought together top athletes from across the region and beyond. Uzbekistan leads in the number of athletes with 37, followed by India, Kazakhstan, China, and hosts Thailand. The participation of many Paralympic champions makes the tournament become one of the most important events for regional disability sports in 2026.
This is the first time Bangkok has hosted an international para powerlifting competition in five years, since the 2021 World Cup.
Le Van Cong is Vietnam’s leading Paralympic powerlifter. The 42-year-old athlete from Ha Tinh has set multiple world records and made history as the first Vietnamese athlete to win a gold medal at the 2016 Paralympics in Brazil, followed by a silver medal in 2020 and a bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Paralympics, completing a full set of Paralympic medals.
Not only did Le Van Cong shine at the Paralympic Games, but he also won numerous medals at world and continental championships and dominated many ASEAN Para Games.
