Gong Oh-kyun no longer coaches Vietnam U23

VOV.VN - Korean coach Gong Oh-kyun will no longer lead the Vietnam U23 team after his contract expires in March 2023.

The Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) confirmed the news on December 12, adding both sides have not found a common voice in their recent negotiations regarding contract extension.

The decision means VFF will look for a new coach for Vietnam U23 ahead of their SEA Games and Asian Games campaigns in Cambodia and China respectively in 2023.

Gong arrived in Vietnam in April 2022 to succeed chief coach Park Hang-seo of the national football team after SEA Games 2022 in May.

Taking the helm, the Korean expert helped Vietnam U23 qualify for the quarterfinals of the 2022 AFC U23 Asian Cup in Uzbekistan after surpassing group matches alongside the Republic of Korea, Thailand and Malaysia.

Gong has a desire to stay in Vietnam for V.League, according to sources. He is working alongside a number of V.League clubs.
