GM Liem takes on Carlsen at Airthings Masters 2022
VOV.VN - GM Le Quang Liem is scheduled to play world No1 Magnus Carlsen of Norway on February 19 at the Airthings Masters 2022 as part of the Champions Chess Tour 2022.
Besides Carlsen, Liem will also take on other leading players, including world No. 3 Ding Liren (China), world No.5 Ian Nepomniachtchi (Russia), world No. 6 Levon Aronian (USA), world No.7 Anish Giri (Netherlands), and world No.9 Mamedyarov (Azerbaijan).
The tournament which is taking place online from February 19 – 26 has attracted 16 players who are playing in a round-robin format to select eight to the quarterfinals.
The Airthings Masters 2022 is part of the Champions Chess Tour, which has total prize money of US$1.6 million, the most attractive in international chess tournaments.
The tournament’s winner will receive US$25,000, while the runner-up will be given US$15,000.
Living and working in the US, Quang Liem is now coaching the chess team at the Webster University.
This year, in addition to international tournaments, he will represent Vietnam to compete at the 31st Southeast Asian games (SEA Games 31) to be held in Hanoi in May, and the 19th Asian games (ASIAD) to be held in China in September.
