Hoang Hai Nam, a 61-year-old amateur cyclist, finished first in the individual road race – Men Masters race category, winning the gold medal.
“Hoang Hai Nam has officially stepped onto the podium to receive the first gold medal for Vietnam at the Asian arena, despite competing with a borrowed bike from the Thai hosts,” announced the Vietnam Cycling and Motor Sport Federation.
This is the first time he has represented Vietnam’s amateur cycling team at an Asian competition.
Nam and other cyclists from the Vietnamese team had to borrow bicycles and equipment from the host country after their bikes and equipment were destroyed in a fire on the road to the competition venue on February 5.
The Thai Cycling Federation purchased 18 helmets, 18 pairs of shoes, and 18 pairs of pedals for the Vietnamese athletes. The hosts also provided 27 specialized bicycles for the Vietnamese team to choose from.
The Vietnam Cycling and Motor Sport Federation has also actively sent additional bicycles to Thailand to prepare for the road race events.
The 2025 Asian Road Cycling Championships features nearly 500 top cyclists from across Asia, including national teams, U23, U18, and veteran cyclists competing in the Master category. The event is part of the Union Cyclist International (UCI) calendar, helping cyclists gain experience for SEA Games 33.
