First bronze medal for Vietnam at 2026 Archery World Cup

VOV.VN - Vietnam’s men’s recurve archery team made history on May 7 by securing the country’s first-ever medal at an Archery World Cup event getting underway in Shanghai, China.

The Vietnamese trio of Le Quoc Phong, Nguyen Hoang Phi Vu and Nguyen Duy defeated the United States 5-3, claiming bronze at the 2026 World Cup Stage 2.

The result marked a historic milestone for Vietnamese archery, becoming the national men’s team’s first medal at a World Cup tournament organised by the World Archery Federation.

To reach the bronze-medal match, Vietnam defeated Israel 5-1 in the quarterfinals before losing 1-5 to powerhouse Republic of Korea in the semifinals.

Despite the setback, the Vietnamese archers delivered an impressive performance against the United States to secure the podium finish.

In the women’s recurve team category, Vietnamese archers Loc Thi Dao, Trieu Huyen Diep and Hoang Phuong Thao narrowly lost 4-5 to India in the quarterfinals.

Vietnam still has several archers competing in the individual categories, including Nguyen Duy in the men’s recurve category and Loc Thi Dao and Trieu Huyen Diep in the women’s recurve competition. The next matches are scheduled for May 8.

The 2026 Archery World Cup Stage 2 in Shanghai is Vietnam’s second major international competition of the year. The coaching staff has sent 11 archers in men's and women's recurve team to China.

The tournament will last through to May 10. It is expected to hone skills of athletes and prepare for the 20th Asian Games (ASIAD 20).

Earlier this year, Vietnam also competed at the 2026 Asian Cup in Thailand, where Nguyen Hoang Phi Vu won silver in the men’s recurve individual, while Phi Vu and Loc Thi Dao earned bronze in the mixed recurve team.
