FIFA, VFF hold workshop on youth talent identification and selection

VOV.VN- A workshop on talent identification and selection criteria, jointly organised by the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) and FIFA, took place at VFF headquarters on June 1, gathering FIFA specialists and coaches and technical staff involved in youth player development.

In his opening remarks, VFF President Tran Quoc Tuan, member of FIFA Competitions Committee, member of AFC Executive Committee, said that following discussions with FIFA’s Football Development Office, a number of support programmes for Vietnamese football, particularly in youth development, had been developed and implemented.

The projects focus on improving the quality of human resources and enhancing talent identification and selection processes.

Vietnamese football has in recent years rolled out a comprehensive system of youth competitions and player development programmes, which have produced encouraging results. Notably, eight youth national teams have advanced through qualification to reach AFC final tournaments, Tuan went on.

Vietnam’s U23 side won the gold medal at the AFF U23 Championship and the bronze medal at the AFC U23 Asian Cup, while the national U17 team secured a place at the FIFA U17 World Cup for the first time. He described these achievements as positive signs of the effectiveness of youth development efforts in recent years.

FIFA High Performance Specialist Eric Abraham said he was pleased to return to Vietnam and continue supporting youth football development programmes.  The workshop is not only an opportunity to exchange professional knowledge but also a step towards building a foundation for high-quality youth training centres and academies, contributing to the sustainable development of football in the future, he added.

Meanwhile, FIFA High Performance Specialist Richard Allen stated that the programme had been designed to combine theory and practice. In addition to classroom sessions, participants will directly observe and assess players during on-field activities to strengthen their ability to identify and select talent.

He expressed hope that participants will actively exchange ideas and learn from one another in order to gain the greatest benefit from the experience and knowledge shared during the workshop.

Representing the 45 participants, coach Dinh The Nam described the workshop as a valuable opportunity to access modern approaches to scouting and youth player development.

He also thanked VFF and the FIFA experts for delivering a practical programme that helps enhance the professional capacity of those working in youth football.

Immediately after the opening ceremony, FIFA instructors began specialised sessions on talent identification, player potential assessment and the development of selection processes aligned with the needs of Vietnam’s national teams.

Through the workshop, VFF hopes to enhance links among clubs, academies and youth development systems across the country, gradually building a coordinated network for identifying and developing talent.

According to the federation, this will also provide an important foundation for improving the quality of youth player development and creating a stronger pipeline of players for Vietnamese football as it pursues higher goals at continental and global competitions.
