Extra time, penalties in play as Vietnam U22 chase SEA Games 33 final spot
VOV.VN - Vietnam U22 may need extra time and a penalty shootout to secure a place in the men’s football final at the 33rd SEA Games.
According to the schedule, Vietnam U22 will meet the Philippines U22 at 3:30 p.m. (Vietnam time) on December 15 at Rajamangala Stadium in Bangkok.
From the semifinals onward, all matches, except the bronze-medal game, follow a knockout format. If the two sides are level after 90 minutes, they will play two 15-minute extra-time periods. If the deadlock remains, the finalist will be decided by a penalty shootout.
Ahead of the semifinal, Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) President Tran Quoc Tuan visited the squad on the morning of December 12 after they wrapped up the group stage.
The previous day, on December 11, President Tran Quoc Tuan was present at Chonburi Stadium to encourage the Vietnam women’s team as they defeated Myanmar to advance to the semifinals of the women’s football event.
During his meeting with the men’s team, President Tran Quoc Tuan praised Vietnam U22 for winning both group matches and topping Group B to progress to the semifinals. He said their performances demonstrated the team’s potential, capability and thorough preparation over recent months.
He stressed that the players have shown their ambition and quality, adding that the key task now is to maintain full focus as they target a place in the December 18 final. He affirmed that the VFF will continue to stand by the team and provide timely support so the players can perform at their best and bring pride to the nation.
On the afternoon of December 12, head coach Kim Sang Sik’s side returned to training to prepare for the semifinal against the Philippines U22, aiming for a spot in the final and the men’s football gold medal at SEA Games 33.
