Vietnamese football achieves historic milestone with seven teams in continental finals
VOV.VN - Vietnamese football has marked a historic year, with seven national teams successfully qualifying for continental final tournaments-a first for the country within a single calendar year.
According to ASEAN Football, Vietnam is the only Southeast Asian nation to achieve this feat. Across Asia, only Japan has reached a similar milestone.
The achievement is even more impressive than Japan’s, as aside from the two futsal teams, all other Vietnamese squads secured their spots with unbeaten records. A historic year for Vietnamese football, ASEAN Football commented.
The total could rise to eight out of eight if the men’s senior national team achieves its target in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers. Currently, Coach Kim Sang-sik’s squad trails Malaysia by three points, with the final group match against the same opponent scheduled for 31 March 2026.
Following FIFA sanctions against Malaysia for fielding seven ineligible players, the team faces a likely forfeit, leaving them with slim chances to overtake Vietnam.
Vietnamese football has also celebrated other triumphs in 2025: the men’s senior team won the ASEAN Cup on 5 January, and the U23 squad captured the Southeast Asian championship on 19 July.
The excitement continues with the 2025 SEA Games, set to take place in Thailand from 9 to 20 December, where four Vietnamese teams, the men’s and women’s senior teams, and the men’s and women’s futsal teams, are aiming for gold.
