Draw for 2022 AFC U23 Asian Cup qualifiers set for July 9
VOV.VN - The draw for the upcoming qualifiers of the 2022 AFC U23 Asian Cup in Uzbekistan is set to get underway on July 9 at the headquarters of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The Vietnam U23 national team have been placed in Pot 1 in the eastern region alongside defending champions the Republic of Korea, Australia, Thailand, and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK).
Elsewhere in the eastern region, 2016 champions Japan, China, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Singapore have been put into Pot 2.
Meanwhile, Hong Kong (China), Indonesia, Laos, Cambodia, and Timor-Leste are in Pot 3, whilst Taiwan (China), Mongolia, the Philippines, Macau, and Brunei complete the list of teams competing in the eastern region in Pot 4.
A total of 43 teams from both Western Asia and Eastern Asia will compete in the qualifiers for the 2022 AFC U23 Asian Cup in Uzbekistan between October 23 and October 31.
Due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the qualifying stage will be held in a single round robin format with each group seeing fixtures take place at a centralised venue.
Moving forward, the 11 group winners and the four best runners-up will qualify for the finals of the tournament, which is scheduled to take place between June 1 and June 19, 2022, in Uzbekistan.
Vietnam do have history in the competition after finishing as runner-up at the 2018 version of the tournament, although they were knocked out in the group stage at the previous event in 2020.
