Competition helps nurture young ‘go’ player

More than 30 competitors participated in the 14th Hanoi go tournament from June 15 -16. The event is a chance for go players to meet. It also helps look for young, talented go players.

Held annually in the city, the Hanoi go tournament aims to create a playground for go players while reviewing training activities in the city and other northern localities.

A highlight of the event was the category for elementary pupils and under to discover and nurture talented go players at a young age.

Dao Nam Anh – Third grader

I only learned to play go a month ago and I’m very excited to compete in this tournament. I hope I can participate in this tournament next year.

Nguyen Manh Linh – Member of Organising Board

This year’s tournament saw more competitors compared to previous years. Participants have shown their desire throughout the tournament. It’s also a very helpful playground.

According to statistics of the World Go Federation in 2014, Vietnam has about 300 intermediate-level go players. The figure is still modest compared to other regional countries such as Thailand, Singapore, the Republic of Korea and Japan. Despite that, the Vietnamese team has won several regional go competitions since 2014.

Such competition has helped find the best go players to compete at home and abroad.
