Chess King Carlsen beats Quang Liem at FTX Crypto Cup
VOV.VN - World champion Magnus Carlsen defeated Vietnam’s leading chess player Le Quang Liem 3-1 on August 18 in the fourth round of the FTX Crypto Cup, the main stage of the Champions Chess Tour.
After being held to a draw in the first two games, Carlsen took the white piece in the third game and produced a strategy of complicating the game. The Norwegian prodigy then lost one knight but took three pawns in return, forcing Liem to defend before eventually falling into his opponent's trap.
Following the mistake, Liem was forced to concede the game. With a 3-1 victory, Carlsen enjoyed some playback after losing to Quang Liem 2.5-1.5 in the first main stage of the Oslo Esports Cup in April.
Stunning the Vietnamese player, Carlsen and Indian GM Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa extended their winning streak to four games. In the fourth round, Praggnanandhaa defeated world number six Levon Aronian with a score of 3-1.
Elsewhere, Alireza Firouzja (France) and Anish Giri (Holland) beat Jan-Krzysztof Duda (Poland) and Hans Niemann (USA), respectively, with the same score of 2.5-1.5.
After four games, Liem has won one, lost three, and earned a total of US$7,500 in prize money. He will have the opportunity to defeat Praggnanandhaa when the two players met in the fifth round, with the game starting at 11 p.m. on August 19.
