Chess GM Quang Liem beats World No1 Magnus Carlsen
VOV.VN - Vietnamese grandmaster Le Quang Liem surprisingly defeated the reigning world number 1 chess player Magnus Carlsen at the Oslo Esports Cup Day 2 on April 23.
In the first game, Quang Liem suddenly defeated Carlsen after 39 moves though he held the black pieces.
The Vietnamese GM holding the white pieces continued to play well in the second game, drawing with the Norwegian born GM after 50 moves.
In game 3, Carlsen won quite quickly against Quang Liem after 34 moves to equalize the score 1.5 - 1.5.
In the decisive game 4, Quang Liem took advantage of holding the white pieces to continuously press the game, causing the reigning world number 1 player to accept defeat and give his opponent a thumb up.
A historic victory over Carlsen with a score of 2.5 - 1.5 helped Quang Liem get his first 3 points at the Oslo Esports Cup with a bonus of US$7,500.
On Day 1 (April 22), Quang Liem lost to world number 9 player Shakhriyar Mamedyarov of Azerbaijan.
On Day 3 (April 24), the Vietnamese GM is scheduled to take on Indian GM Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa.
The Oslo Esports Cup that is taking place in Norway has attracted eight players namely Magnus Carlsen (Norway), Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (Azerbaijan), Anish Giri (Netherlands), Jan-Krzysztof Duda (Poland), Jorden van Foreest (Netherlands), Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa (India), Eric Hansen (Canada) and Le Quang Liem (Vietnam).
