Chau Tuyet Van and teammates retain world poomsae title
VOV.VN - Vietnamese trio of Chau Tuyet Van, Nguyen Thi Le Kim and Lien Thi Tuyet Mai have successfully defended their title in the Team Female Under 50 category at the Chuncheon 2026 World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships in the Republic of Korea.
Receiving a bye in the opening round, the Tuyet Van-Le Kim-Tuyet Mai trio defeated Mexico in the second round to advance to the semi-finals.
They then faced a strong Korean trio in the semi-finals. The Vietnamese athletes delivered an impressive performance to defeat the host team and secure a place in the final.
In the final on September 19, Tuyet Van, Le Kim and Tuyet Mai defeated a German trio to retain the gold medal they won at the 2024 World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships in Hong Kong (China).
“I was a little nervous after we finished our performance. When we learned that we had won, we were overwhelmed with joy and happiness,” Tuyet Van, 36, said.
Reflecting on the crucial semi-final against the hosts, she shared that the Vietnamese team entered the contest with confidence and regarded it as an early final.
“We knew we had to give it everything, regardless of the result. We beat three Korean athletes in the final of the 2024 world championships in Hong Kong (China) to win gold, but these Korean players were completely different. They were younger and stronger. Still, we performed well enough to win," she stressed.
In addition to the team gold, Tuyet Van also took silver in in the Individual Female Under 40 after losing to Chang Ting Jung in the final. The athlete from Chinese Taipei had produced a strong performance earlier in the competition, defeating No. 4 seed Chaemin Yoon of the Republic of Korea in the opening round.
This is the second gold medal Vietnamese Taekwondo has secured at the world championships in Chuncheon.
Earlier, Nguyen Thien Phung and Nguyen Thi Le Kim won Vietnam’s first gold medal in the Pair Under 50 event.
