The upcoming WBC title bout will mark Thao’s return after a five-month absence.

The Vietnamese boxer has endured a frustrating year having missed the world boxing championships in the United States after his rival pulled out of the fight. This was followed by a leg injury picked up in a traffic accident in May which meant Thao was unable to compete against Rongguo Wu of China for the WBA Asia Championship.

Along with missing this crucial title fight, the injury meant that Thao will miss out on fighting at the SEA Games 30, which is due to be held in the Philippines in November.

Starting boxing at 16 years-old, he won a gold medal in the National Boxing Championships and also became champion of the Steel Competition Boxing Tournament, an annual event for professional boxers, in 2016.

This year’s championship will  see the participation of a number of talented Vietnamese boxers, including Nguyen Thi Thu Nhi, Sam Minh Phat, Tran Duc Loc, and Dinh Hong Quan. The local fighters are set to take on boxers from the Republic of Korea (RoK), Thailand, the Philippines, and Uzbekistan.

The championship’s highlight will be the bout between Jong Seon-kang of the RoK and Tomjone Mangubat of the Philippines, who will fight at 57 kg.
