ASIAD women’s football: Vietnam eliminated after 7-0 loss to Japan

VOV.VN - It came as no surprise that Vietnam lost 7-0 to powerhouses Japan in the last Group D match of women’s football at the ongoing 19th Asian Games (ASIAD) in Hangzhou, China, on September 28.

Explaining the defeat, coach Mai Duc Chung said the team have run short of key players, suffered physical exhaustion from the recent World Cup, and lost concentration.

“This year Vietnam have continuously competed in many different tournaments, including Olympic qualifiers, SEA Games, World Cup and now ASIAD. Vietnamese women have found it difficult physically to adapt to such busy schedules,” Chung confided.

He also admitted that Vietnamese women did not perform well in their clash with Japanese women and they eventually conceded the defeat.

The defeat means second-placed Vietnam failed to progress to the knockout stage on goal difference in comparison with Uzbekistan, Thailand and the Philippines which all finished second and got three points each in their groups.

The next round will see the encounters of China, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Taiwan (China), Japan, the Republic of Korea, Uzbekistan, Thailand and the Philippines.
