Anh Minh makes history as he reaches US Junior Amateur Golf Championship’s final

VOV.VN - Vietnamese golf prodigy Nguyen Anh Minh has made history by advancing to the final of the 2025 US Junior Amateur Golf Championship, becoming the first Vietnamese player ever to reach this tournament’s championship match.

Anh Minh defeated American golfer Nicholas Gross with a 3-1 win in the quarterfinals on July 24 and secured a 4-3 victory over China’s Qiyou Wu in the semifinals on July 25, earning his place in the final round.

The Vietnamese player is scheduled to face Hamilton Coleman of the United States in the championship match on July 26 (local time), which will be contested over 26 holes, as per the tournament’s final-round format.

This marks the second time that he has officially qualified to compete in the prestigious golf tournament, one of the most prestigious tournaments for junior golfers worldwide. In the championship last year, Anh Minh lost 3-2 to Xihuan Chang of China in the quarter-finals.

At just 18 years old, Anh Minh is already regarded as Vietnam’s leading male golfer. He is also considered a top candidate for the Vietnamese national team at the 33rd SEA Games, scheduled for later this year in Thailand. Though the national team’s final roster has not been officially announced, Anh Minh’s strong performances make him a front-runner for selection.

Two years ago, at the 2023 SEA Games in Cambodia, Anh Minh earned an individual bronze medal and contributed to Vietnam’s silver medal in the team event. Since then, he has gained considerable international experience and maintained impressive form in global competitions.

Since the beginning of 2025, he has competed in seven international tournaments, including winning the Malaysian Amateur Open 2025 and the Vietnam–Korea K-Golf Lab Invitational. In 2024, he teamed up with Ho Anh Huy and Le Khanh Hung to win the Nomura Cup, where he also finished first in the individual standings.

In August, 2025, Anh Minh is expected to return to Vietnam to compete in the 2025 national golf championship.

Currently, he holds 52nd place in the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) — the highest ranking ever achieved by a Vietnamese amateur golfer.
