Vietnamese golfers to debut at World Amateur Team Championships

VOV.VN - Nguyen Anh Minh and Le Khanh Hung will make history this October as the first Vietnamese golfers to compete at the prestigious World Amateur Team Championships (WATC), set to take place at Tanah Merah Country Club in Singapore.

The biennial tournament features two competitions: the Espirito Santo Trophy for women, scheduled from October 1 to 4, and the Eisenhower Trophy for men, which will run from October 8 to 11.

The Eisenhower Trophy will welcome 36 national teams, selected based on the combined World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) of each country’s top two male players. Vietnam’s men’s team, ranked 28th, will be represented by Nguyen Anh Minh (WAGR No. 48) and Le Khanh Hung (No. 200).

Meanwhile, 36 women’s teams will vie for the Espirito Santo Trophy. Vietnam’s women’s team, comprising Le Chuc An (No. 291) and Nguyen Viet Gia Han (No. 418), currently ranks 38th and is on the official waiting list for participation.

According to the Vietnam Golf Association (VGA), the WATC is a key target in the national team’s 2025 competition schedule, alongside the SEA Games and Asian Youth Games.

First held in 1958 for men and 1964 for women, the WATC is the world’s premier amateur team golf event. Many of the sport’s greats, including Tiger Woods and Scottie Scheffler, have competed in the tournament before going on to dominate the professional scene.

Each team consists of two or three players, competing in 18-hole stroke play across four rounds. In each round, the two lowest individual scores are counted toward the team total. The final score after four days (72 holes) determines the team’s ranking in the championship.
