AFC Nations League proposal to expand opportunities for Vietnam
VOV.VN -Vietnam’s national football team could gain more regular international match opportunities during FIFA international windows as the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) considers launching an AFC Nations League, a new competition modeled broadly on Europe’s UEFA Nations League.
According to the AFC, the proposed tournament aims to provide a more structured and sustainable international competition framework for Asian national teams, addressing long-standing challenges faced during FIFA Days.
The confederation noted that many Asian teams struggle to secure suitable opponents during international windows, while logistical and operational costs for arranging friendly matches have continued to rise.
“AFC Nations League represents an important step forward in our ongoing commitment to support the development of our 47 member associations,” AFC General Secretary Datuk Seri Windsor John said in a statement.
“By introducing a structured competition platform during FIFA international windows, with more stable scheduling and clear sporting incentives, we aim to ensure consistent access to high-quality matches while addressing the logistical and cost-related challenges faced by national teams,” he added.
The proposed competition is designed to ensure that national teams play regular international matches against opponents of comparable strength, helping improve competitiveness across the continent. At the same time, the AFC hopes the centralised format will enhance cost efficiency and provide a clearer development pathway for national teams.
If implemented, the AFC Nations League would mark a significant shift in how international football is organised in Asia, potentially benefiting teams like Vietnam by offering more meaningful matches, improved preparation and greater continuity in international competition.
