A busy year for Vietnamese athletes in 2024

VOV.VN - Vietnamese athletes are anticipated to compete in five key tournaments in 2024, including the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, the Paris Olympics, and the AFC U23 Asian Cup finals.

Qualification for 2026 FIFA World Cup

In the second qualification round for the World Cup, the Vietnamese team are due to face off against Indonesia, the Philippines, and Iraq in Group F.

The two strongest teams will ultimately secure their places in the next round of qualifiers.

At present the Vietnamese team are now in second place with three points.

AFC U23 Asian Cup finals

At the AFC U23 Asian Cup's final round, which is scheduled to take place from April 15 to May 3, Vietnam will play in Group D alongside Uzbekistan, Kuwait, and Malaysia.

In Qatar, the four teams will compete in a round-robin format in the group stage. The two strongest ones will then advance to the quarter-final stage.

Uzbekistan are theoretically considered to be the strongest team because they have regularly secured good results at continental youth tournaments over recent years.

The AFC U23 Cup Finals will also serve as a qualifier for the 2024 Olympics held in France.

The top three finishers will qualify for the Paris Games, while the fourth-placed team will participate in a playoff against an opponent from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for a chance to compete at the Olympics.

The Paris Olympics 2024

Vietnam aims to have between 12 and 15 athletes to compete at the Olympic Games this summer.

So far, four athletes - swimmer Nguyen Huy Hoang, cyclist Nguyen Thi That, and marksmen Trinh Thu Vinh and Le Thi Mong Tuyen - have qualified for the Paris competition.

There are six months left for other teams, such as gymnastics, badminton, shooting, weightlifting, rowing, canoeing, judo, boxing, archery, swimming, and athletics, to get the mission done.

The ASEAN Cup

The Vietnamese team will compete at the ASEAN Cup, previously known as AFF Cup, hoping to win back the trophy they previously clinched in 2008 and 2018.

The tournament is set to take place from November 23 to December 21.

V.League 1

The highlight of the V.League 1 2023/24 season is that several matches will make use of VAR technology.

After eight rounds, the fight for the championship sees fierce competition among strong teams such as Hanoi Police FC, Hanoi FC, Nam Dinh FC, Thanh Hoa FC, Binh Duong FC, and Binh Dinh FC.
