94 female golfers from 24 countries compete in Asian Amateur Championship

VOV.VN - As many as 94 golfers from 24 countries are competing for titles at the 2025 Women’s Amateur Asia-Pacific (WAAP) Championship that opened at Hoiana Resort & Golf in central Quang Nam province on March 6.

The tournament, the first of its kind held in Vietnam, features prominent golfers such as 17-year-old Rianne Malixi from the Philippines, ranked fourth in the world, and 16-year-old Soomin Oh from the Republic of Korea, ranked 10th in the world.

As the host country, Vietnam has 6 representatives, including 14-year-old Gia Han, who has won many national tournaments. In 2022, Gia Han became the youngest athlete in the history of the Vietnam National Golf Championship when she won the trophy at the age of 11.

The WAAP Championship winners will receive a spot to compete in three renowned major women’s professional golf tournaments - the AIG Women’s Open, Amundi Evian Championship, and Chevron Championship 2025. In addition, they will have the opportunity to participate in high-profile events such as the Hana Financial Group Championship, ISPS Handa Australian Open, Women’s Amateur Championship, and Augusta National Women’s Amateur.

In the 2024 edition, Chun-Wei Wu from Taiwan (China0 claimed the WAAP Championship title with a final score of 270 strokes at the Waterside course of Siam Country Club in Thailand.

Established in 2018 by the Royal & Ancient (R&A) and the Asia-Pacific Golf Federation, the WAAP Championship aims to nurture talent and provide opportunities for top amateur female golfers in the region to showcase their skills on the international stage.

It also offers the unique privilege of changing a golfer’s career through entry to three prestigious major women’s golf tournaments - the AIG Women’s Open, Amundi Evian Championship, and Chevron Championship.
