200 athletes to compete in national roller sports championship

VOV.VN - The national roller sports championship is scheduled to take place from August 16 to August 18 in Hanoi, with the event providing competitive races to 200 athletes from 10 cities and provinces from across the country.

According to the organisers the Skating Federation of Vietnam (SFV) at a press conference held in Hanoi on August 13, the occasion aims to promote the practice and competition of roller sports nationwide, while also seeking fresh talents for national teams ahead of global tournaments.

They will compete in events such as speed skating, sprinting, sliding, and skateboarding, vying for a total of 15 sets of medals.

The tournament will see organisers hold categories for athletes of different age groups, with participants taking part in the freestyle slide, speed, and skateboard events.

Furthermore, a training course for more than 30 Vietnamese referees under the guidance of foreign expert Shirley Tay Lai Fong from the International Federation of Roller Sports (FIRS) will also get underway.

Roller sports were first introduced in Vietnam around the early 2000s. Since then, more and more people have engaged in rollerblading and skateboard sports nationwide.

Vietnam hosted the first-ever international roller sports tournament back in 2013. Five years later the Southeast Asian roller sports championship was organised in Vung Tau city.
