17-year-old Vietnamese driver wins 2025 F4 South East Asia Championship
VOV.VN - 17-year-old Vietnamese racer Alex Sawer Hoang Dat has been crowned champion of the 2025 F4 South East Asia Championship, becoming the first Vietnamese to claim an overall title in a Formula racing series recognised by the International Automobile Federation (FIA).

In the final round at Sepang, Malaysia, on September 20, Niccolo Maccagnani (Italy) won Race 1 via pole position, but Alex Sawer secured enough points to be crowned 2025 F4 SEA Driver’s Champion.
Hoàng Đạt had already secured the title a day earlier, after two qualifying races in Round 5 on September 20, when he built an unassailable 94-point lead (297 points versus 203) over Australian driver Seth Gilmore. With only 90 points left on offer from the remaining three races, the championship was mathematically his regardless of the final results.
The inaugural F4 South East Asia Championship, held from May to September 2025, brought together 15 drivers across five teams.
Racing for Evans GP (Australia), Alex Sawer dominated the season by sweeping all three races in the opening round at Sepang, repeating the feat in Buriram (Thailand), overcoming penalties and setbacks in Bangsaen to still take victory, and reaffirming his lead with another win in Round 4 at Sepang.
Before the final round, he had already won 9 out of 11 races, secured 6 pole positions, and recorded 7 fastest laps - a commanding performance over his rivals.
“This is a truly special moment for me. I’m very happy that my efforts throughout the season have been rewarded with the championship, but I also know this is just the beginning. My next goal is to seek opportunities in higher-level competitions and move up to F3 in 2026,” said Alex Sawer at the award ceremony on September 21.
Before this milestone, Alex Sawer had steadily built his reputation on international circuits. Starting from karting, he competed in F4 India in 2023 (finishing 5th overall), then made headlines in F4 China 2024 with two victories, a pole, and a fastest lap.
He also became the first Vietnamese driver to race in the Formula Regional European Championship (FRECA) 2024 and later scored points in the Formula Regional Middle East Championship (FRMEC) 2025, another first for Vietnam.
Alongside single-seaters, he tested himself in the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia series, underlining his ambition to grow as a professional driver.
Alex Sawer Hoang Dat is currently studying at an international school in Ho Chi Minh City.
